DP83848I: Is it possible to receive data with RMII with M0 without RMII port

Part Number: DP83848I

Hi team,

My customer is now using STM32 in a project with RMII port and working with Ethernet IC like DP83848I.

Now we try to promote our MCU like M0 to do a placement, but one main challenge is that our M0 don't have port for RMII protocol, so is it possible to transfer RMII to like I2C with a IC outside the MCU?  Or are there any better solutions with using M0 in this situation?

I am really not familiar with protocols and also ethernet IC, so this might be a silly question, and also I am not sure this question should belong to Ethernet IC or MCU, so pls give me some suggestion and feel free to forward this question to related colleges, thanks!

  • Hi Manu,

RMII is very particular on timing between the MAC and PHY. For example, depending on which RMII configuration PHY is in (Master or Slave), there may be a 50MHz clock signal connected into XI or a 50MHz clock will be coming out of the PHY to the RMII slave MAC. I would suggest seeing if you can find a M0 that has MII protocol which can substitute to make the connection work. You can reach out to the MCU team accordingly to check their portfolio.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome

  • Hi Gerome,

Really thanks for your response. Another related question for this case is, for now does TI have the Ethernet IC which integrated both PHY and MAC?

If yes that would be a possible solution for our customer.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Manu,

At this time, we do not have an product that is capable of this.

    Sincerely,
