TPD1E05U06: How to make sure the ESD component is damaged by using DMM meter

Hi All,

       The same as the title, is it correct that using DMM meter diode mode to confirm ESD component is damaged or not? And how to measurement?

    Yes you could measure that with a DMM. You can simply measure resistance by connecting the positive probe to the I/O pin (pin 1) and the negative probe to GND (pin 2). If the DMM measures a low resistance short, then the diode is damaged. 

    While a short is the most common failure mode, there are certain cases where the diode can fail open if it is overstressed hard enough. To make sure this is not the case, set your DMM to diode-mode, swap the probes around where positive is on GND and negative is on I/O, and measure the forward voltage drop. If the voltage drop is around 0.5 V, then the diode is not failed open. If it does not detect a forward voltage drop, then the diode is damaged. (Note: this is only for unidirectional diodes.)

    Thanks for your reply it's clear.

    By the way, I used probe+ on I/O and probe- on GND then measurement about 0.1V, is it definitely damaged right?

    I would measure resistance instead of a diode drop in that configuration since it is reversed biased. Seems suspicious, but I'd just confirm by measuring the resistance.

    We don't have that spec'd for this device, but it should be pretty obvious if its bad. The DMM should beep indicating a short if it is bad.
