DP83826I: EtherCAT Application

Part Number: DP83826I

Hello -

For my application, I would like to use the DP83826I PHY. I want to use MII mode, I do not wish to use SMI for set up and would like the PHY to boot with the correct settings.

From reading the datasheet, SNLA344B and the forums here I understand that for EtherCAT, enhanced mode is required. I have followed the strap table in SNLA344B but am left wondering whether this will allow the PHY to boot in MII MAC mode?

For EtherCAT, Strap1 is required to be pulled low, Strap7 is required to be pulled high which sets Strap8 into ALT. Function, Signal Energy Detect, which is required to be disabled for EtherCAT applications, meaning strap8 needs to be pulled high to disable Signal Energy detect. Strap8 however is the setting for MII/RMII modes and is MII by default as low and RMII by being pulled high.

How do I ensure that the PHY boots in MII without register access considering the above configuration?

Thanks you for any assistance you can provide.

Adrian

  • Hi Adrian,

When strap1 is set to 0, the device will automatically be placed in MII mode. Bit 4 of register 0x468 will confirm this, if you have SMI access. Otherwise, look for toggling on the RX_D2 and RX_D3 lines to confirm the device is in MII mode.

    Thanks,

    David
