THVD1451: isolation with pulse transformer

Part Number: THVD1451
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1450

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering RS485 PHY with pulse trans former.

The customer uses ARCNET (2.5 Mbps, termination 100 Ω)

ARCNET uses half-duplex RS485 transceiver.

A common application example for ARCNET ids to insert a pulse transformer into the differential signal line of a half-duplex transceiver.

Could you please see below.

The customer is considering the ADM485 for a half-duplex transceiver.

I'm going to introduce THVD1451. Let me know if there are other better devices out there.

If possible, could you provide any information about reference designs, circuit examples, and design methods when using a half-duplex transceiver with a pulse transformer.

These information helps the customer consider TI's transceiver.

General information for non-isolated RS485 + pulse transformer is also preferred.

---Customer's Request

1. Could you please recommend a TI's RS485 transceiver suitable for the attached transformer is recommended.

ADM485 is also being considered as a competing candidate.

2. Could you please provide application examples such as recommended ICs, reference designs, and design guidelines?

examples of connection circuits between transceivers and pulse transformers (with or without external passive components),

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

    1. The THVD1451 is full duplex - the THVD1450 would be the eq. Half Duplex device. In terms of comparing to the ADM485 - yes this device could replace the ADM device and work in similar applications. The main difference is that the ADM485 isn't as fast as the THVD1450. We don't have any specific references on this type of application - however is your customer trying create an isolation barrier? Is that the purpose of the transformer? If yes - we do have isolated RS-485 devices - please let me know if that is a possibility that your customer may want to explore.

    2. Nothing specific to an addition of a pulse transformer - but we do have isolated parts provided with application mock-ups in the datasheet if your customer is looking for an isolated system.

    Please let me know !
