Using Full Duplex RS485 for half duplex applications - Advice Request

Part Number: SN65HVD71

Hi,

We have purchased a full duplex device and we need to use it for half duplex application which is modbus.
We intend to connect RX and TX of the full duplex device together to do this. Do we have a problem with this?
Advice requested.
Kind regards

  • Any half-duplex transceiver is just a full-duplex transceivers with inputs and outputs connected together. Doing this outside the chip is no problem.

  • Hi Vinod,

Clemens is correct - in half-duplex devices they are connected internally so doing it externally with a full-duplex device is not a problem. I'd suggest to keep the point where you short the lines together closer to the device to help potential EMI/EMC issues.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Best,
