Hi Team,

Do we have a switching solution that could cover our customer requirements below?

What they have:

A microcontroller with a step-down voltage controller powered from a 12v battery.

USB firmware makes this MCU a USB device. Will always be a USB DEVICE.

Uses USB-C connector.

What they need:

Hook a tablet/cellphone (USB HOST) to the MCU (USB DEVICE).

Get power from the MCU when the battery is available; else provide tablet/phone has to provide power to the PCB.

Switch USB-C power direction seamlessly upon the battery availability while keeping the USB connection alive.

Hi Jejomar,

We do have a family of MSP430 MCUs with USB.

I think what you are looking for are USB PD (power domain) controllers.

Hi Dennis,

Many thanks for looking into this. USB PD solution is indeed what we were looking at. However, we're having challenges in selecting a specific part with an associated reference design or documentation similar to our customer's needs.

Can you help us find a considerable device that we could look at? We're looking at HD3SS2522 but we're not entirely sure if it be overall suitable. Thank you!

There is nothing like the HD3SS2522 in the MSP430 family of MCUs.

Hi Jejomar,

The TPS25750 may be a good device to look through. This is a power only Type-C PD controller capable of acting a source and sink, as well as a sink only solution.
