DP83867IS: Placing magnetics on the different side of PHY

Part Number: DP83867IS
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TC812EVM-MC

Hi team,

My customer wants to place the magnetics on the different PCB side of DP83867IS.

I have a couple of queries about this.

1. Is placing the magnetics on the different side OK for DP83867IS?

I'm concerned because the datasheet mentions using via for the signal trace is not recommended.

If you have reference design which has magnetics on the different PCB side, please let me know.

2. For the above purpose, my customer is considering to use the mirror mode.

Does the port remapping work as the solution?

Does mirror mode support bi-directional communicaiton with MDI?

Regards,

Itoh

  • Hi Itoh-san,

Thank you for your query. It is true that it is not recommended to introduce vias nor crossover for this part. However, if customer needs to put magnetics on the other side, would it be possible to use integrated magnetics like we do on DP83TC812EVM-MC for DP83867 portion? These have through-holes which can serve as the indirect way to have magnetics on other side of PCB.

For mirror mode, the functionality of the MDI is the exact same as non-mirror mode, so bi-directional communication will be supported.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
