Hi,

I have ordered TPS65987DJEVM and started practicing it.

I have a few questions:

1. Where can I find full schematics of this eval board including the layout?

2. Application Customization Tool accesses I2C lines of PD through TIVA processor which creates a virtual serial port in my windows 11 machine. Somehow it emulates I2C lines over COM10 as you can see it at below image.

I want to control I2C lines from my custom windows application developed in C to experiment TPS65987DDJ commands. Is there a kind of document describes what kind of protocol is used for COM10 to control I2C lines?

3. The eval board came without any accessories, just PCB assembled and It uses a weird power adapter connector. Is there any AC/DC wall adapter which is suitable directly for the eval board's power jack?

4. Could you tell me the differences between parts TPS65987DDKRSHR, TPS65987DDJRSHR and TPS65987DDHRSHR?

Hi Mehmet,

1. You can find the schematic for this EVM starting on page 8 of the EVM user guide. Regarding layout files let's take that offline.

2. We don't specifically have any documentation about COM10 protocols but we do have documentation about I2C control to send 4cc commands, I'll link them down below! The Technical Reference Manual goes in depth into the available registers and what 4cc (I2C) commands are available to use.

3. Any standard Dell or HP notebook adapter is suitable to use to supply power through the barrel jack:

4. DH is the standard device supporting Alternate mode and USB 3, DJ/DK has the same functionality but is intended to use for Thunderbolt 3 designs (DJ) or Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 (DK). DJ and DK designs will need to refer to Intel Reference Design. Attached below is a comparison chart that shows the exact difference between each ROM variant.

Hi Raymond,

Thank you for your reply.

1. It would be beneficial for me to have full schematics and layout.

2. As I understand from you, it is not possible to send some I2C commands from my custom C application using this eval board?

3. My notebook is also Dell but it has USB-C adapter which is not suitable for the EVM. Thank you for the exact adapter. I'm going to order one.

4. In our embedded product, we need to provide an USB3.1 port to the external user so that the external user can connect it to an iPad. Please see below image.

The USB Port on the SoM side should have the data role as a DEVICE and power role as a SOURCE. That is the reason we need to use TPS65987DDJ. We don't need Thunderbolt but since DDJ is available in the stock, we want to use DDJ. Would that be a problem?

5. I have a new question about Linux Driver. Our SoM runs Linux Kernel v5.4. And as I see the kernel source code, there is a driver for tps6598x in linux\drivers\usb\typec\tps6598x.c. It seems it is developed by intel and pushed to upstream. Do you know that whether the driver supports TPS65987DDJ? When you refer to Intel Reference Design, do you have a link for Intel Reference Design ?

Hi Mehmet,

1. Taking this offline.

2. It's possible to write your own custom C application to send 4cc commands to the PD EVM over I2C, however we not have any documentation on COM communication.

3. Sounds good!

4. TPS65987/8 DJ and DK are only meant to be used for Thunderbolt implementation which requires Intel Reference Design.

5. I'm not too familiar with this driver and what functionality it supports. You can find more information regarding Intel Reference Design from Inte's webpage: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-technology-developer.html You will need to reach out to Intel for reference design material.

Dear Raymond,

I also ordererd the board and starting by now. I am also very interested in the full schematic and Layout data (preferred Altium Designer Data if possible). This would be very helpful. I'm using the Altium Designer - and the schematics in the documentation of the EVM shows Altium Designer Schematics. It would help to rapidly setup our own Hardware for our Customer (Aftersales Market Project) Thanks in Advance, Thomas
