DS280BR820: SATA3.0

Part Number: DS280BR820
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS280MB810, , DS160PR810

Hi team,

Could you help me to confirm if DS280BR820 or DS280MB810 can support SATA3.0? The following thread gives different answers, which one is correct?

https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface-group/interface/f/interface-forum/720114/ds280mb810-sas4-and-sata-support?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=DS280BR820%20SATA#

https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface-group/interface/f/interface-forum/836384/ds280br820-sas4-application-support

If support, how many loss it can compensate?

If none of them are supported, could you help recommend a redriver product that support SAS3.0. Please also provide the data that can be compensated.

Best Regards,

Amy Luo

  • Hi Amy,

Our PCIe redrivers such as DS160PRxxx support SAS3.0.  Is there a particular reason you are considering DS280BR820/DS280MB810 over these?

    Thanks,
    Drew

  • Hi Drew,

    Thank you for your response.

There is no special reason, they are the part number that the customer's selection.

So does DS280BR820/DS280MB810 not support SATA3.0?

Can I recommend the DS160PR810 directly to the customer? Is it the best fit for the customer application?

    Best,

    Amy

  • Hi Amy,

My recommendation would be that the customer use one of the redrivers that are noted to support SATA3 on ti.com (see link below).  Any product from the DS160PRxxx family would work well too.  I would recommend considering some modeling to ensure that the redriver will provide appropriate gain for the customer's application.

    https://www.ti.com/interface/pcie-sas-sata/products.html#p1389=SATA3

SATA has some OOB signaling which Ethernet signaling does not have.  Because of this, we would not typically recommend DS280BR820/DS280MB810 for this application if there are other devices which have been more extensively tested for this application. The reason that DS280BR820/DS280MB810 have been considered for SAS4 in the past is that at the time, they were the only redrivers rated for a data rate that was comparable to the SAS4 datarate.

    Thanks,
    Drew
