SN75DP159: About using SN75DP159 as retimer for DisplayPort monitor

Do you need a re-timer for the source side design? 

The DP159 as a DP re-timer is targeted for the DP sink side design. For source side design, I would recommend using the DP141 or TDP142 linear redriver.

I need a retimer in order to have the best signals on the DisplayPort monitor.

In the application report, it is written:

"the DP159 can also be used in a DisplayPort application (like a DisplayPort Monitor)"

What do you suggest?

David, I see that DP141 and TDP142 are redrivers, not retimers.

The DisplayPort Monitor is a DP sink side design. 

The DP159 output is not DP compliant, so DP159 will likely fail the DP compliance testing when being designed for the source side. So I do not recommend using DP159 as a DP re-timer when doing a source side design.

I assume the CEX module itself is already DP compliant. Both DP141 and DP142 are linear re-driver, they will help compensating for the channel loss between the CEX module and the re-driver, but will not clean up any random jitter. If CEX module is DP compliant and DP141/142 being linear re-driver, this will also ensure the passing of the DP compliance testing as long as the CEX module output signal stays with the DP141/142 linearity range.

Hi David,

I think I am going to use SN65DP141.

It supports VESA DisplayPort 1.4a, 2.0, and eDP 1.4.

It compensates for losses due to board traces and that's exactly what I want.
