TCAN1043-Q1: Interface expansion design of MCU for multi ways CAN

Part Number: TCAN1043-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1043, TCAN4550

Hi Team

Now I meet a demand that customer need up to 10 ways CAN(TCAN1043) while the MCU can only support 4 ways. Do we have some reference design for expansion of interface such as Mux.

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Nanxiao,

Do you mean that the MCU will need to communicate with 10 unique CAN channels at the same time? If all CAN channels need to be monitored simultaneously, then there will need to be an active CAN controller present on each channel and MUXing would likely not be possible. To easily add CAN channels without changing the MCU selection, an external controller may be used such as the TCAN4550. This device is a fully integrated CAN FD controller and transceiver that communicates with the host MCU via SPI. Six of these devices may be used with the current four-channel design to support a total of ten independent CAN channels.

If the CAN channels do not need to be monitored concurrently, then using a digital MUX for the TXD and RXD signals from the MCU would be possible. It is ideal to MUX the digital signals and still include one CAN transceiver per channel.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Eric Schott
