DP83826I: About the difference between slave mode and master mode

Part Number: DP83826I

Hi team,

Let me ask you simple questions about DP83826 as follows.

Q1. I think the difference between "slave mode" and "master mode" is the difference in the way of clock supply? Is it correct?

Q2. I would like to use DP83826 to connect to a microcontroller(like a STM32). Is it correct to consider the microcomputer to be the "MAC layer" in the attached figure?

Best regards,

  • Hello,

Yes, the only difference between slave and master mode is the way clock is supplied. Master PHYs have their 25MHz clock input on XI which then becomes a 50MHz CLK on the respective pin (usually RX_D3 in some of our devices). Slave PHYs need this 50MHz clock to be fed into their XI.

Yes, the MCU can be thought of as the MAC layer if the MAC pins of the PHY are connected to them via RMII, MII.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
