TSS721A: MBUS and TSS721A

Part Number: TSS721A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TSS521

Hi

The customer wants to make a circuit from RS232 (422,485) to MBUS Master, can you provide relevant technical information first (there is already a TSS721A spec), is there a reference schematic?

  • Gareth,

We don't have an exact reference design for this. I've notified engineers who can help address this question, please allow some time as it is a holiday week in the US.

    Regards,

    Eric Hackett

  • Gareth,

Unfortunately the TSS721A and TSS521 serve as meter-bus slave devices. These are the only MBUS solutions that TI offers.

We do have a reference design (TIDM-FRAM-WATERMETER) that shows this operating as a slave device, but we wouldn't have anything prepared that exhibits bridging between MBUS and RS-232/RS-485.

    Best,

    Danny

  • Hi Danny

The customer wants to convert the MBUS from the system via RS232 or 485 via TSS721, is this OK?

Please also provide assistance in providing similar application schematic

    Thanks

  • Gareth,

Sorry if there was any confusion from our prior posts, but unfortunately we don't have any application schematic for this type of use case with RS-xxx.

There are some typical application diagrams in the TSS721A data sheet that show how it can interact with a microcontroller. From your drawing, I don't see why an RS-232 or similar transceiver would be needed here. Additionally, you'd need to keep in mind that RS-232 is a full-duplex communication protocol, while the TSS721A operates as a half-duplex device.

    Best,

    Danny
