Hi Ti Team,

We have designed a 10BASE-Te to 10Base-T1L Full-Duplex Media Converter using the DP83822I PHY and DP83TD510E SPE PHY and are currently exploring a re-design/spin to a readily available Ethernet PHY (due to DP83822I shortages)

We understand not all Ethernet PHY's support RMII Repeater Mode: RMII Slave-Slave (with clock sourced via 50Mhz Osc) operation and timings on the RMII interface are critical.

Will need to support capacitor coupling (replacing RJ45 magnetics) so forced 10Mb full-duplex (Auto-Neg Disabled) operation is also required.

We can see the DP83848J has a healthy inventory would this PHY be a viable solution to replace the DP83822I in our design?

If we were to use the DP83822IF will it be okay to drop into our current design without any major changes (we are not using Fibre) but stock is available in low volume?

Hi Daniel

The 848J will be a good replacement, although a board re-design would be needed. This app note will be a good guide on how to use capacitive coupling for the 848:

The 822I can be replaced with the 822IF, fiber functionality is the only difference (which you mentioned you wouldn't need.) This would be the easiest solution as you could place directly into your current design.

Thanks Alvero, appreciate your help, we will weigh up our options on both parts.

So just to confirm DP83TD510E <---> DP83848J timing are okay?

We have been caught out with REFCLK Rise to CRS_DV Delay and REFCLK to TX_EN Hold on a different PHY not being within spec..

So just wanted to double confirm these two PHY's are happy talking to each other (Bootstrapped as both RMII Slave, 10M Full-Duplex, with No MCU required), before we go into re-design?

Hi Daniel,

Both devices are RMII compliant and should be able to link-up.

DP83826 would also be another good alternative. (Even better than 848 because it is our latest part)
