TCAN1044V-Q1: CAN Bus fault Spec inquiry

Part Number: TCAN1044V-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5088-Q1

Hello team,

A customer asks about how the bus fault range is determined. Would you please explain it or share any document?

   Ex)  A: 12V system : +/- 45V

          B: 24V system : +/-58V

          C: 48V system : +/-70V

Thanks,

Sam Lee

  • Sam,

Please use TCAN1044AV-Q1 in place of TCAN1044V-Q1. It is a drop-in upgrade, and TCAN1044V-Q1 will not have supply to support new projects over time. TCAN1044AV-Q1 will have this increasing supply.

We have a few resources that can help explain your question. The primary driver of this protection requirement is load dump during ignition, when the battery supply voltage level can fluctuate significantly. The clamping of this pulse is dependent on the type of system, as you mentioned above. Load dump in 12 V systems is typically clamped near 40 V, and in 24 V systems it is typically clamped near 58 V, which is why VBUS is capable of handling this voltage in case of a fault event during ignition.

Here is an application note that discusses load dump in the context of LM5088-Q1: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snva681a/snva681a.pdf
