I have one spacial requiement for communicating 100Mbps Ethernet and 1000Base-X Optical Network with Network Switch using SFP.
Setup image as per below -
what coud be suitable configuration i need to set in EVM side ?
Is it require any configuration chane at Network switch side ?
Regards,
Nikunj
Hi Nikunj,
You can configure the EVM into 1000M media converter mode, refer to section 4.1.8 Straps for 1000M Media Convertor in the userguide:
https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/snlu237/snlu237.pdf?ts=1673453629740&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Ftool%252FDP83869EVM
This should help you to get communication on the copper end of the EVM.
Is it require any configuration chane at Network switch side ?
Please check what mode the Fiber port of the switch is configured for, if it is 100BASE-FX or 1000BASE-X, also make sure to check the SFP modules used as well.
Also please read the register address 0x0002 of the PHY, if it is A0F1 please follow the below app note for media conversion mode:
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Rahul
Hi Rahul ,
I will test this currently i have only one SFP with 1000Base-X so i can not check with 1000 Media converter mode ,
i have test this with 100 Media mode
10 Mbps speed ( fixed ) --> 100Base-FX supported SFP <---> optical cable --> 100Base-FX SFP --> Network switch ( 10/100/1000 mbps supported )
but it is not working
i change the speed of fiber with 10 Mbps and try with master and slave mode as well .
please give your suggestion .
Regards,
Nikunj
Hi Nikunj,
I media converter mode the speed should be the same on both Copper side and Fiber side.
If you want to test 100Base-TX, then you have to configure for 100BASE-FX on media end and also use an SFP that supports that.
If 10mbps is on copper end, that is the reason may be link is not seen on fiber side.
Hope this clarifies.
Regards,
Rahul
I have configure EVM with 100Base-FX Media converter mode - Below strap option
OPMODE_0 - Jumper
OPMODE_1 - Open
OPMODE_2 - Jumper
0X01DF - 0X0045
0X01EC - 0X1FFC
Testing
1) On PC (100Mbps Speed at Ethernet ) -> 100Base FX SFP ( 100Mbps speed ) -> Optical cable -> 100BaseFx SFP -> Network switch
Internet connection work properly
2) Now I change setting on PC as per below
2) On PC (10Mbps Speed at Ethernet ) -> 100Base FX SFP ( 100Mbps speed ) -> Optical cable -> 100BaseFx SFP -> Network switch
Not working internet connection
3) 0X0C00 - 0X2100 value to 0X0100
On PC (10Mbps Speed at Ethernet ) -> 100Base FX SFP ( 10Mbps speed ) -> Optical cable -> 100BaseFx SFP -> Network switch
Not working internet connection
it has to work now right as i set same speed at both end copper and optical .
Please guide me for the configuration setting if i am wrong.
Regards,
Nikunj
Hi Nikunj,
Thank you for sharing the information. I will try to go through this setup in the lab next week and get back to you with an update.
There is also another E2E query by you, I will have to spend some time in the lab to check results on my end as well.
Regards,
Rahul
Hi Rahul ,
I think it will never work 10Mbps fiber speed so i have to test it with below configuration only , as mention in datasheet 9.6.1.69 FX_STS Register Device doesn't support 10Mbps fiber Mode.
100 Mbps speed ( fixed ) --> 1000Base-X supported SFP <---> optical cable --> 1000Base-X SFP --> Network switch ( 10/100/1000 mbps supported )
currently i ordered "1000Base-X supported SFP" once i received i will test it , if you have with you then please test it so i have batter idea
Regards,
Nikunj
Nikunj,
Rahul is away right now (off in TI, US). He will get back to you this week as he mentioned in the thread above.

Hi Nikunj,
I think it will never work 10Mbps fiber speed so i have to test it with below configuration only , as mention in datasheet 9.6.1.69 FX_STS Register Device doesn't support 10Mbps fiber Mode.
Yes, this is correct.
100 Mbps speed ( fixed ) --> 1000Base-X supported SFP <---> optical cable --> 1000Base-X SFP --> Network switch ( 10/100/1000 mbps supported )
I should have a 1000Base-X SFP, let me replicate the above mentioned topology test on my end and update you. Please give me 2-3 days to update you on my findings.
Regards,
Rahul
Hi Nikunj,
I have done tests for the following topology:
100 Mbps speed ( fixed ) --> 1000Base-X supported SFP <---> optical cable --> 1000Base-X SFP --> Network switch ( 10/100/1000 mbps supported )
Here are my findings, I have highlighted all the working setups in BOLD:
Test1:
PC (10/100/1000) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
PC (100M forced) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
- In this above topology no Link is noticed, but when I force the Network switch to 100M speed, then whole setup works. Following is the setup:
PC (10/100/1000) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (100M forced)
PC (100M forced) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (100M forced)
Test2:
Below test setups also work:
PC (10/100/1000) <-> (869 1000M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
PC (100M forced) <-> (869 1000M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
Regards,
Rahul
Hi Rahul ,
Thank you for the update .
as my network switch in not able to change with 100M forced mode i have to perfome Test 2 -
1) DP83869EVM configuration
Link_Loss- Short ( jumper apply on the connector )
MIRROR_EN - short ( Jumper applu on the connector )
- PC (10/100/1000) <-> (869 1000M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
Working OK (ANEG_DIS - 1 - Fiber Force mode / 0 - Fiber Autonegotiation ON -- WORKING IN BOTH CASE)
- PC (100M forced) <-> (869 1000M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
1) (ANEG_DIS = 0 - Fiber Autonegotiation ON)
Not Working
Activity LED Blink (LD6-BLINK) , fiber ditected (LD4 = ON) but no link ( LD1/LD2 = OFF )
All LED OFF after writing 0x1FFC to register 0x01EC (set bit [0] to 0)
2) (ANEG_DIS = 1 - Fiber Force mode)
Activity LED Blink (LD6-BLINK) , fiber ditected (LD4 = ON) , but still no link ( LD1/LD2 = OFF )
I have verify with all combination of open / short of Link_Loss and MIRROR_EN Strap jumper setting but not working .
can you please help me to set up proper settings on EVM.
is it need to change any res like 0h, 4h , 14h , c00h to change the speed or else ? ( please help me to implement correct setup )
i have EDIMAX GS-1026 V3 Network switch
Thank you for your support .
Regards,
Nikunj
Hi Nikunj,
Let me take pictures of my setup and share with you.

Rahul
Hi Rahul,
Thank you , and it would be great if you share all Phy Res. Read Value from USB-2 MDIO Tool .

Nikunj
Hi Nikunj,
Apologies for the delay in getting back, as you have mentioned the below setup does not work, it is a mistake from my end.
PC (100M forced) <-> (869 1000M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
When I configure 869 in the above mode I noticed Link on the Fiber side, but no link on the copper end as the PC is forced to 100M and the PHY is configured for 1000M. Looking that Link is up on fiber end I assumed it was working.
Also, in DP83869 datasheet a note is mentioned that In 1000M media converter mode, Cu Auto-negotiation will not downgrade to 100 Mbps if LP supports
only 100Mbps and link will fail.
Please find attached register reads and link status on the Switch.
Thanks,
Rahul
Hi Rahul,
So I need Smart / Manage Switch in this setup right?
Test1:
PC (10/100/1000) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
PC (100M forced) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
- In this above topology no Link is noticed, but when I force the Network switch to 100M speed, then whole setup works. Following is the setup:
PC (10/100/1000) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (100M forced)
PC (100M forced) <-> (869 100M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (100M forced)
--> Working Ok only we have Manage Switch right ? ( can you please share your Network switch part number so i have some idea )
Test2:
Below test setups also work:
PC (10/100/1000) <-> (869 1000M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000) --> Work OK
PC (100M forced) <-> (869 1000M media converter) <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Optical Cable <-> Gigabit SFP Module <-> Network Switch (10/100/1000)
- this is not possible at all as downgread 100Mbps speed not supported ( as per datasheet ) .
Conclutation :- i need manage / smart network switch then and then my abovemention application setup can run right ?
( you can close the thread once network switch partnumber provide over thread responce )

Nikunj

Hi Rahul ,
i have one more question :-
refer above link this product can work in 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet speed .
Lets consider below setup
PC1 --> DP83869EVM1 ( configure in 1000 / 100 Media converter mode ) --> 1000Base-X SFP --> optical cable --> 1000Base-X SFP --> DP83869EVM2 ( configure in 1000 / 100 Media converter mode ) -- PC2
Test1 - PC1 in 1G Ethe Speed PC2 in autoNeg. mode ( 1G speed detected) ( both EVM in 1000Mbps Media Converter configuration )
Test2 - PC1 in 100Mbps Eth speed PC2 in AutoNeg. Mode ( 100Mbps speed detected ) ( both EVM in 100Mbps Media Converter configuration )
Test 3 - PC1 in 10Mbps Eth speed PC2 in Auto Neg Mode ( not work ) Please suggest Configuration setting .
can above all 3 test run successfully Automatic without any config change ?
i have seen that some media converter avalable in the market if you change speed in one side ( PC1 ) then speed automatiocly change another side ( PC2 ) and no need to implement any configuration change , they have manage some how internaly
is this DP83869EVM can do the same ? if yes please suggest the configuration setting .
Regards,
Nikunj
Hi Nikunj,
Can you please specify your application? My understanding is that you want to have a media converter to connect to a network switch, am I correct?
Are you planning on using the EVM for this ? or planning to make your own media converter using 869?
Just wanted to get some clarity if either are the use cases.
Thanks,
Rahul
Hi Rahul,
I have Two Application for that application POC (proof of concept) i use the EVM to validate the concept , after sussesfull test i will design my own product.
1) media converter to connect to a network switch - this query already resolve by you .
2) fiber optic communication with support of any(10/100/1000) Ethernet Speed - ( i am lookiung for 2.5G and 5G as well if TI have this support otherwise 10/100/1000 work for me) - i this application , i am ok to use both side EVM / media converter if it works . ( no specific network switch connection requirement )
Lets consider below setup
PC1 --> DP83869EVM1 ( configure in 1000 / 100 Media converter mode ) --> 1000Base-X SFP --> optical cable --> 1000Base-X SFP --> DP83869EVM2 ( configure in 1000 / 100 Media converter mode ) -- PC2
Test1 - PC1 in 1G Ethe Speed & PC2 in autoNeg. mode ( 1G speed detected) ( config. both EVM in 1000Mbps Media Converter configuration )
- Working OK
Test2 - PC1 in 100Mbps Eth speed PC2 in AutoNeg. Mode ( 100Mbps speed detected ) (config. both EVM in 100Mbps Media Converter configuration )
- Working OK
Test 3 - PC1 in 10Mbps Eth speed PC2 in Auto Neg Mode ( not work ) Please suggest Configuration setting .
- not Working ( because fiber not support 10Mbps speed i think ) provide your suggestion.
can above all 3 test run successfully Automatic without any configuration change ? - i need communication with above 3 test case without any power off / any manual change .
Regards,
Nikunj
Hi Nikunj,
Thank you for sharing your application details.
Your understanding is correct, the above 3 tests cannot run automatically without any configuration changes (Test 3 is not supported by this PHY).
Fiber link-up happens at fixed rate and IEEE 802.3 does not offer option to downgrade the link speed as in Copper that causes challenge to dynamically detect the fiber link-partner speed and reflect it on copper.

Rahul
