MAX232: 1uF capacitors

How about all the 1uF capacitors in this reference circuit

1. Can electrolytic capacitors be used?

2. Can MLCC capacitors be used?

3. The capacitance must be 1uF?

1. Yes; this old device was designed for them.

2. Yes; the lower ESR makes them work better for the charge pumps.

3. You must use the values recommended in the datasheet in order to achive the guaranteed electrical characteristics.
