MAX3243: RS232 without -12V power

Part Number: MAX3243
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN75C185, TRS3243E

Hello expert,

Do we have COM port level shifter IC doesn't need -12V power? Customer is using MAX3243 before but -12V will no longer being used in their system, they would like to find another solution without -12V power requirement. Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Ann Lien

  • A plain transceiver like the SN75C185 would require ±12 V supplies. But the MAX3243/TRS3243E uses charge pumps to generate the output voltages from a 3.3 V or 5 V supply. If the customer is using the MAX3243, then −12 V has never been necessary.

  • Hi Ann,

Clemens is correct - the MAX3243 uses a 3.3V to 5V supply range for voltage supplies and uses internal charge pumps to generate the required RS-232 bus voltages.

Customer doesn't need a -12V in the system to use this device.

Please let me know if there are any other questions!

    Best,

    Parker Dodson
