TIOL1123: TIOL1123 vs SN65HVD101

Hi,
we use SN65HVD101 IO-Link PHY for our IO-Link devices.
We consider switch to TIOL1123.
There are some differences between these transceivers and differences between in the way they are described e.g.,
SN65HVD101: Driver enable delay = 5...8us
TIOL1123: CQ re-enable delay after UVLO = 10...50ms.
Can I compare these values? Is the time 10...50ms after connecting TIOL1123 to 24V?

Or more general question: could you please provide migration guide between these transceivers?

    These two specifications are not necessarily the same, but from a functional perspective they could be considered as such if you are considering the power up event on the SN5HVD101 as the "Enable" event to start timing when the CQ driver becomes functional.

    The TIOL112 does have an equivalent Driver Enable Delay = 4 us max to correspond with the SN65HVD101's 5-8us specification.

    However, the TIOL11x (TIOL111 and TIOL112 families) have a feature not in the SN65HVD101 where the CQ driver is held in a Hi-Z state for a small delay of 10-50 ms after the L+ voltage has risen above the UVLO threshold.  This delay was added to prevent the erroneous data on the CQ line while all devices on the board power up and the MCU has time to run through it's initialization routine. 

    The SN65HVD101 does not have this same UVLO related delay, and therefore the CQ driver will be available as soon as the UVLO voltage has been exceeded.

    In a brownout type of situation, the SN65HVD101 would be able to resume communication more quickly than the TIOL112, pending the MCU's ability to do so.  But the SN65HVD101 does not have a mechanism to ensure that boot up noise on the digital IO pins won't cause erroneous data on the CQ pin while the MCU boots like the TIOL11x devices have.

    Other main differences include:

    • Supply voltage: SN65HVD101 = 9-30V, TIOL112 = 7-36V
    • Integrated HBM ESD: SN65HVD101 = ±2kV, TIOL112 = ±4kV
    • Integrated Contact ESD (IEC-66100-4-5): SN65HVD101 = NA, TIOL112 = ±8kV
    • Integrated IEC-61000-4-5 Surge: SN65HVD101 = NA, TIOL112 = ±1.2kV/500Ω
    • Rdson(max): SN65HVD101 = 12Ω, TIOL112 = 4.5Ω
    • Temperature: SN65HVD101 = -40 to 105C, TIOL112 = -40 to 125C
    • Reverse Polarity Protection Diodes: SN65HVD101 = external, TIOL112 = Internal
    • Transient protection: SN65HVD101 = ±50V, TIOL112 = ±70V
    • Over current condition: SN65HVD101 = Current Fault Indicator for a over-current condition but the driver stays on, TIOL112 = Actively limited to avoid an over-current condition
    • Fault Pins: SN65HVD101 = separate PWR_OK, CUR_OK, and TEMP_OK pins, TIOL112 = the power, current and temperature faults are logically OR'd into a single NFAULT pin
    • Master Mode (up to 700mA of current source and integrated 10mA current sink): SN65HVD101 = NA, TIOL112 = Included
    • Enhanced Inductor de-magnetization: SN65HVD101 = NA, TIOL112 = Included

    Hi Jonathan, thanks for fast and detailed answer.

    I have more general questions:

    1) would you recommend to switch from SN65HVD101 to TIOL1123 for IO-Link device? In other words: can TIOL1123 be considered as a successor of the SN65HVD101?

    2) Could you estimate if TIOL1123 will be better available that the SN65HVD101?

    Hi Mateusz,

    Yes, the TIOL112x family of devices would be considered a successor to the SN65HVD101 and SN65HVD102 devices.  Actually the TIOL111x devices were considered the successor to the SN5HVD101/2 devices, and the TIOL112x devices are a refined version of the TIOL111x devices. 

    The TIOL112x devices are TI's newest generation of IO-Link transceiver and is recommended for all new applications.  It is manufactured in one of our newest process technologies that will have an increasing supply over time and better availability than the SN65HVD101.
