ESDS312: Ethernet surge protection

Part Number: ESDS312
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESDS314,

Hi Team,

what is the proper use of ESDS312 or ESDS314:

IEC 61000-4-5 Surge Class2 1kV 24A 42Ohm

-> When placing the ESDS31x between connector and ethernet magnetics?

Best Regards,

d.

  • Hi d,

The proper use of ESDS312/ESDS314 is between the magnetics and the PHY as shown in the schematic below:

We recommend placing the ESD device after the magnetics to take advantage of the protection offered by the transformer. Some ethernet transformers can offer very high surge protection. This configuration will also help protect from differential surges that will couple through the transformer.

    Regards,

    Sebastian
