RS-232 to 1000BASE-T Solutions?

Hello,

I would like ask if TI has chip/IC solutions for implementing RS-232 to 1000BASE-T. A project I am working on has a requirement for Serial over Ethernet, which I will take RS-232 serial to be converted to 1 GbE. Another approach would be to do something like RS-232 -> USB 2.0 -> Ethernet. Any products that would help achieve the goal? Thanks for your time.

  • Ethernet typically works with a full-blown networking stack that manages addressing, routing, connections, and requires an OS.

There is no standardized protocol for serial over ethernet, so there is no integrated solution.

Where does this requirement come from? Is there an existing network that you have to integrate into?

  • Hi Jack,

Along with what Clemens has inquired - what speed is the Serial data needing to be ? I see gigabit ethernet but then RS-232 (max 1Mbps) and USB 2.0 (max ~480Mbps) then 1000BASE-T - so I am confused what the end goal for adding an RS-232 device into the ethernet stack - there is no standardized approach so I am wondering on why this signal chain is needed - its usually one of these protocols not chaining them together like this. If you could share the goal of the application as I am having trouble understanding why the RS-232 is needed.

    Best,
