DP83867CS: Input Power Requirements

Part Number: DP83867CS

A customer is working on a design utilizing the DP83867CS Ethernet PHY, and he has a couple of questions:

  1. He noticed the reference board uses an LDO to power it, but he would like to use a switching supply instead if possible. He was only able to find power consumption data but nothing related to the maximum allowable ripple. Would it be okay to use a switching power supply instead of an LDO and what would the ripple requirements be?
  2. Similarly, he’d be interested if we have any data on power consumption with a SGMII interface utilizing the same PHY – he was only able to find SLNA241 but that covered RMGII at 1000BT.

Thanks!

  • Hello Sanel,

I'll have to check with my team. I can get back to you by Monday.

  • Hello Sanel,

LDO was not validated with ripple or with a switching supply. From my understanding, ripple which is lower than 50mV peak-to-peak can be tolerated, but this has to be validated by customer.

On DP83867CS, we don't power consumption data in SGMII mode. Can you please let me know what is the VDDIO voltage you are using and if you are using dual supply mode or triple supply mode? I can try to give you an approximate estimate of the current.
Please let me know if you are looking for typical or max power consumption estimate.
