TLK1501: Cable length limit when using the TLK1501 with copper cable

Hi,team,

My customer has the following questions,

"I would like to know the cable length limit (guideline) when using the TLK1501 (0.6-1.5Gbps transceiver) with copper cable. Two patterns when the serial data speed is set to 0.6 Gbps and 1.25 Gbps as conditions.

In addition to the cable length limitation mentioned earlier, is it possible to convert the TLK1501 serial signal CML → LVDS and isolate it with a high-speed LVDS isolator? Generally, I think that 1.25Gbps optical transceivers are used, but we are considering whether it is possible to use different physical layers according to the distance and required band, so if you have any examples, could you please give us information? Thank you for your cooperation."

This is very important for my customer, please give some suggestions, thank you.

Hi Katherine,

Do you know the insertion loss of the cable you have in mind? In general, we will want to target meeting the minimum VID and jitter tolerance specifications listed in the datasheet.

Regarding converting TLK1501 CML to LVDS, I think this would be possible. The following app note includes information on connecting CML to LVDS. However, I think it would still be important to verify that the expected signal levels fall within the recommended operating conditions of the device(s).

Looking at TI's isolated LVDS buffers, it seems like these have a maximum speed of 150 Mbps. If it's not possible to find an isolated LVDS buffer at a fast enough data rate, I think looking into optical would be a better approach.
