SN65HVDA1040A-Q1: compatibility TCAN1051DRQ1

Genius 4750 points
Part Number: SN65HVDA1040A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1051, SN65HVDA1040A, TCAN1057A-Q1,

Our customer is using TCAN1051DRQ1.

They would like to know the difference between the  TCAN1051DRQ1 and SN65HVDA1040AQDRQ1 and whether or not it could be considered a drop-in substitute.

Please advise us.

Regards,

  • Hi Kuras,

The SN65HVDA1040A is a much older device that does not offer the same performance as TCAN1051 in regards to supported data rate, bus fault protection, IO support (no IO pin option), and ESD. The mode options for these devices is also not the same (Standby vs Silent modes). If you are looking for a replacement device for the TCAN1051, I would recommend the newer TCAN1057A. This device was designed to be a replacement for TCAN1051 and offers higher data rate support, the same mode options and pinout, and similar bus fault and ESD performance (though still slightly less than the TCAN1051).

The full part number to replace TCAN1051DRQ1 would be the TCAN1057ADRQ1.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Thank you for comparison table.

We got new question from customer.

    Please advise us about following.

    【Inquiry】
Please let us know about the SN65HVDA1040AQDRQ1 Pin 5.
Pin 5 has a function called SPLIT.
Is it OK to connect pin 5 to Vcc?

We recommended the TCAN1057 as an alternative to the TCAN1051, but due to delivery issues, they also want to consider using the SN65HVDA1040AQDRQ1.

Pin 5 of TCAN1051 is NC or VCC, and their circuit connected pin 5 to VCC.

    Regards,

    Kura

  • Kura,

The SPLIT pin is used as a stabilization output for the SN65HVDA1040A-Q1. For the TCAN1057A-Q1, this is NC. This is why the newer TCAN1057A-Q1 is compatible with older designs, but newer designs are not necessarily backward-compatible with SN65HVDA1040A-Q1.

The SPLIT pin is nominally the CAN common-mode voltage of VCC/2.

I would strongly advise your customer to stick with the newer TCAN devices.

    Best,

    Danny
