Is TI considering devices that support I3C ?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCA39306, TCA39416, TMP139

When I saw the many I2C device on a bus question, it triggered a question about "Improved Inter Integrated Circuit" [I3C, see https://www.mipi.org/specifications/i3c-sensor-specification?hsLang=en ] sponsored by the MIPI alliance. Are there any TI plans to have ICs that fully support I3C? We see STMicroelectronics are now calling out I3C support on their newest MCUs.

  • Hey Jim,

At the moment, there is the TCA39416 and the TCA39306 that supports voltage translation in I3C applications.

Also see [FAQ] What Analog Switch / Multiplexer should I use for I3C applications? for more information.

  • Hi Jim,

TI is part of the I3C MIPI working group for I3C and has been involved with the I3C specification.

As you may know, TI is broken/made up of many product lines. Each product line being responsible for many family of devices. Several product lines within TI have been looking into I3C but it really does depend on market needs and whether or not the market will adopt I3C. Currently it is in its infancy stage with limited devices currently on the market.

I'm (my thought and not TI's) not expecting I3C to replace I2C seeing as I3C does have its limitations (bus cap limits). I do expect as the market matures, I3C will begin to grow (with new products from TI as well as other manufacturers).

Currently TI has the TMP139 (JEDEC I3C) and TCA39306/TCA39416 (level shifters).
