MAX3232E: Difference between MAX3232E and MAX3232E-Q1

Part Number: MAX3232E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , TRS3232E, TRSF3232E, TRSF3232

Dear Specialists,

My customer’d like to confirm the difference between MAX3232E and MAX3232E-Q1.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---Question

I checked the datasheet and ESD is described differently.

Regarding MAX3232E, the IEC specs are listed for both contact discharge and air gap discharge in P.4 of datasheet.

In case of MAX3232E-Q1, only the DESCRIPTION states ±15-kV IEC ESD protection pin to pin (serial-port connection pins, including GND)

Does this means MAX3232E-Q1 doesn't have an IEC spec of Contact Discharge spec.

Could you please let me know any other differences.

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • HI Shinichi,

The Q1 version is our automotive part and it very similar to the non automotive qualified device. However they are different devices and so they have different ESD ratings - it doesn't specify what IEC spec its referring to - but based on the ratings of the device its most likely only referring to air-gap discharge - where the non-auto has more ESD specifications.

Does your customer need a strict Q1 rating?  If yes - why do they need automotive qual'd - as I will be honest - I don't see much difference in performance between the non-q1 and the q1 device - but the non auto device has more ESD protection ratings - while the Q1 device is a similar die to the industrial and commercial  and should perform similarly we don't have the data to back that up. Also Q1 usually implies -40C to 125C operation and this Q1 device does not meet that (its -40C to 85C).

    Please let me know!

    Best,

    Parker Dodson

  • Hi Parker,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand MAX3232E and MAX3232E-Q1 use the same die, but have different specs due to different ESD requirements.

I'll share this with the customer.

The customer really wants to use the MAX3232E, but is considering the MAX3232E due to poor availability.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • You can also use the TRS3232E (which is identical) or the faster TRSF3232E.

(The MAX3232E-Q1 is available only in the TSSOP package, which is currently available for the MAX3232E.)

  • Hi Clemens,

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes, TRS3232E is same as MAX3232E and TRSF3232 is faster device.

I also share with the customer.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
