Hello, is this device robust enough to be used without external TVS diodes protection? If not can you recommend an alternate device

This device has protection against ± 4-kV IEC 61000-4-5 1.2/50-μs surges (and this is the strongest protection that is integrated in a transceiver). If you need stronger protection, you have to add external TVS diodes.

Is this device a suitable/drop-in replacement for a ST485ECD

Yes.

The ST485EC is designed for 5 Mbps. The THVD1439 is designed for 0.25 Mbps and has a lower slew rate to reduce EMI. If you actually need more than 0.25 Mbps, use the THVD1449 instead.

Clemens is correct - the THVD1449 is the faster version (if you need a faster version of the device) and our best suited match.
