SN65HVD251: CAN device damage while the power connector

Hi Team,

As customer feedback, there is a connector between the cable from the power source to board B due to the long distance.

Once the connector aged and the GND pin maybe cannot connect firmly, the CAN on board A or board B will damage.

If they use individual power sources for both boards, there will not have the issue.

May I know how to fix the issue?

Is it helpful to use a higher common mode voltage range CAN solution?

Peter,

Maybe there is a chance that the 48 V supply is appearing on CANH/CANL? Yes, a higher bus fault device like TCAN1044A-Q1 should be able to handle this. Do you use the R_S pin (pin 8) of the SN65HVD251? I would recommend looking at TCAN1044A-Q1 as an upgrade if it is not needed.

Per customer information, 48V will not appear on CANH and CANL.

Hi Peter,

If there is not a firm ground connection to the board, the local ground potential may drift to the +48V supply. This potential difference in common mode references to the CAN bus may cause problems for transceivers with a lower bus fault tolerance such as SN65HVD251. I agree that switching to the newer TCAN1044A with a higher bus fault tolerance would help prevent damage from occuring under this condition.
