AM26LV31E: Fault protection

Part Number: AM26LV31E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM26LV32E

Hello team,

I received a question from the customer.

This is a rudimentary question, but what does "Fault Protection" mean on the AM26LV31E web page? There is no mention of Fault Protection in the datasheet, and I could not figure out what this item means.
The same is true for the AM26LV32E, which will replace the DS26LV31TM and DS26LV32ATM, which are scheduled to be EOL.

Regard,

Masa

  • The common-mode range guarantees that the device works correctly. The fault protection range guarantees only that the device does not get damaged. This essentially corresponds to the recommended operating conditions and the absolute maximum ratings.

  • Hi Masa,

    1. From a performance viewpoint the AM devices are very close matches (differences are marginal) to the older DS devices that are being EOL'd.

    2. Fault protection on these devices is meant to refer to the abs max ratings (which is not really fault protection - but that's how we classified it on the product table) - however this product page is very wrong. The system puts the fault protection and common mode ratings for all RS-422 devices as +/-7V - which isn't actually required by driver only devices in RS-422. There is almost no fault protection on this driver, and no real common mode range (beyond GND to VCC) - this is typical of RS-422 drivers; the DS devices are not any better - so if this is already being used in the customers system it isn't a problem because it really isn't different from the previous device used with respect to those ratings.

Please let me  know if you have any other questions and  I will see what I can do!

  • Hello Clemens, Parker,

Sorry for the late reply. I understand. I explain to the customer that the Absolute Maximum Ratings and Recommended Operating Conditions should be checked before use.

    Regards,
