THVD1510: Find ESD-related parts

Part Number: THVD1510

Hi team

I have a customer who is currently using THVD1510, which is an ESD component that suppresses signals, but does the customer want to find an ESD component that can suppress the power supply that can help?

Note: Customer products require iec61000-4-4 compliance

Thanks,

Boyan

  • The purpose of most ESD protection components is to shunt the ESD currents into the power supply, where they are eaten by the decoupling capacitors.

Just ensure that there are decoupling capacitors where they are needed, i.e., near the transceiver, and near the ESD protection components at the connector (if the transceiver is not right at the connector).

  • Hi Boyan

Generally, ESD protection on the power lines would be closer to the actual power supply rather than on the vcc pin. If the customer would like to move forward with ESD protection on the vcc pin, is there a specific level of iec61000-4-4 that they are trying to reach? Is there a specific kV rating they are looking for? Please feel free to ask any other questions.

  • Hi Zach

Thank you for your reply. Can you teach me how to verify the specifications with the customer and what should I ask him to find the right ESD component for them more accurately?

    Thanks,

    Boyan

  • Hi Boyan,

If I'm understanding correctly, the customer if the costumer is asking about iec61000-4-4 compliance protection on the VCC pins, then they may be talking about EFT instead of ESD. EFT is the electrical fast transient, which can look like large spikes on the power lines, including vccs pins. This is what the iec61000-4-4 standard refers too.

The THVD1510 is rated for 4kV EFT protection on the data busses, but when it comes to the vcc pin, there are options to integrate protection, such as the circuit below.

    The parts used are:
    A TVS Diode
    C1, C3, and C4 are 0.1 µF – 1 µF bypass capacitors.
    C2 is a bulk 10 µF – 100 µF capacitor.
FB1 and FB2 are ferrite beads.
CM1 is a common mode choke.

Please reach out with any other questions,
    Zach
