TCAN1042H-Q1: Which scenario may cause +/- 70 fault protection need for the CAN transceiver ?

Part Number: TCAN1042H-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1042H

Hi

May customer is not sure if they need 70V fault protection or not.

may i ask in which scenario may cause +/- 70 fault protection need for the CAN transceiver ?

and how do i check my system to select the right fault protection level device?

thanks!

  • Hi Tsai,

The +-70V of bus fault protection is most commonly seen in industrial applications that operate in electrically hazardous environments. In an automotive setting, the highest DC voltage present is typically present during load dump which will be slightly greater than 2X the battery voltage. For 12V applications, the +-58V rating of TCAN1044A is generally plenty enough so this device may be used instead of the older TCAN1042H.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
