We plan to extend one of two USB ports on our SoM to two to four ports. We will embed the part on a Linux platform, but I don't see any SW interface beyond the on-chip SDK.

The TUSB8042 and TUSB8043 appear to be pin compatible. Pls advise any issues supporting both on a single land pattern for supply chain protection.

Are there ICs best designed in at this time that are most likely to be available in the future?

We would only use one IC, perhaps only two ports. What I mean is that if we cannot purchase one we would purchase the other. I recognize they may need different firmware but I am primarily interested in use of the PCB without modification to install either IC.

ok, the firmware should be same for TI hub devices. And suggest to use TUSB8042A or TUSB8043A, there are pin to pin.

Is TUSB8044 also similarly interchangable on a PCB as TUSB8042 and TUSB8043?
How different is code developed on TUSB8044EVM for TUSB8042 and TUSB8043, you imply '8042 and '8043 are the same above?

1: they share same EVM.

2: no specific code development from your side. generic hub driver on windows or linux should work for all these hub device.
