TCAN4550-Q1: CAN Termination

Part Number: TCAN4550-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN4550

Hi , I am planning to connect a CAN controller with transceiver (TCAN4550) to the OBD connector of a CAR. I am planning to read the engine RPM message. As I am connecting a external device, it is allowed to use a 4 meter long OBD cable and also can I connect my device without termination resistor at my device end.(If I could assume that the CAR CAN network already have two end 120 Ohm termination, Is it necessary to put a 120 ohm in my device end.

  • There should be 120 ohm termination on both sides of the CAN bus inside the car you are connecting to through the OBD port which would mean that you do not need to include the termination resistance on your board.  Adding an additional 120 termination resistance may actually impact the communication on the bus, so I would recommend not having it for your initial test.  However, if you are designing a board, it is always a good idea to include a spot for termination just in case it is required so that you can install it if necessary.
