DP83869HM: In the media converter mode, regarding the relationship between the SD signal and the LINK signal

Part Number: DP83869HM

Hello, I'm Daechan Lim.

I am currently using the DP83869HM in 1000M media converter mode through strapping.

While using this chip, I have observed a phenomenon where the PHY chip goes into PWDN (power-down) mode if it fails to recognize the LINK with the MAC (Ethernet switch IC) after detecting the SD signal.

When the SD signal is detected and the SD LED illuminates, the PHY functions normally if the LINK is established within a few seconds. However, if the LINK is not recognized during the SD LED illumination for a certain period, it seems like the PHY chip goes into SLEEP mode. Even after the MAC boots up, it does not establish a connection with the PHY.

I have been unable to find information about this issue in the datasheet, and I acknowledge that there may be a possibility of a problem in my circuit design.

Does the DP83869HM go into PWDN mode when the MAC and LINK are not established?

Thank you always

  • Hi Daechan,

I don't think the device goes into a power down mode that way. Can you confirm how you are assuming that the device went into a power down mode? Are you reading any registers?

Also, you mentioned that you are using the PHY in the media converter mode. In that case where is the MAC connected? Can you please provide a block diagram of the system and connections?
