PCA9538: Leakage in case I2C pull up to 5V with VCC = 3.3V

Part Number: PCA9538
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCA9538

Will there be any leakage current from SDA/SCL  external pull up 5.25V to VCC =3.3V.

Datasheet of TCA9538 mentions absolute maximum Vin to be 6V but it also recommend s V_ih max = Vcc in there. Please suggest.

  • Hi Trushal,

Will there be any leakage current from SDA/SCL  external pull up 5.25V to VCC =3.3V.

The leakage spec is found in the Ii electrical spec in the datasheet:

When the input is = to VCC or GND, and VCC = 2.3V to 5.5V, the current on SCL or SDA is a maximum of +/-1uA. So there is some leakage in/out of the pin, but it is very minimal. Adding an external pull-up that connects to SDA/SCL to VCC = 3.3V to 5.25V would not be affected by this leakage current.

Datasheet of TCA9538 mentions absolute maximum Vin to be 6V but it also recommend s V_ih max = Vcc in there. Please suggest.

This is on purpose. The absolute maximum spec for VI (-0.5V < VI < 6V) is the maximum current range that can be applied to the device without permanent damage to the device. Operate outside of that limit, and TI can no longer guarantee that the device was / wasn't damaged due to electrical overstress.

The VIH spec is listed in the recommended operating conditions of the datasheet. It is recommended to the user of the device to keep within the VIH < VCC voltage range for the SDA/SCL pins to guarantee the datasheet parameters in the electrical specifications. For example, the user of the device can surely operate the device with VCC = 5.75V, but TI can no longer guarantee the electrical characteristics in section 6.5. We CAN guarantee that the device did not sustain damage since it was within the absolute maximum ratings.

If you want to guarantee the electrical characteristics listed in section 6.5, operate within the recommended operating conditions of the datasheet.

    Regards,

    Tyler

  • Thanks Tyler, We will have maximum external pull up on SDA/SCL  to VCC.
