DP83848K: Connect an Device with the PHy to an PoE Switch

Hi,

we have an PCB with the DP83848KSQ as Ethernet Phy. Our device is not designed to be powered by PoE. But we have an customer, who connect the Ethernet Port to an PoE Switch (ALLNET Switch full managed industrial 12 Port Gigabit ALL-SGI8112PM).

The switch uses the following standards:

IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet/PSE
IEEE 802.3at Power over Ethernet Plus/PSE

My question is, can the DP83848 be damaged by the PoE Test pulse? The pulse should meet the IEEE 802.3a/at.

Hi Moritz,

If the PCB is not designed for PoE then there are chances for the board/ PHY to get damaged when connected to a PoE application.

The ESD ratings for DP83848 are below:

thank you for the reply. But I am not sure, if the ESD protection will block an PoE Test pulse?

Hi Mortiz,

We cannot confirm that until it is tested. You can try placing TVS diodes on the MDI lines of the line for protection.
