TCAN1044-Q1: the function of the output capacitor to GND

Part Number: TCAN1044-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDM-02014

Hi team,

What's the function of the CAN output capacitor to GND? I find that we didn't give the specific parameter in the datasheet. And in some reference design, I find that there are even not output capacitor, such as TIDM-02014. Is it essential to add this capacitor? What's the risk without this capacitor? And what is the value of the capacitor?

  • Hi Hale,

To clarify, are you referring to the 4700pf capacitor on the data bus?  This capacitor is part of the split termination, so instead of using a single 120 Ohm resistor, this example has two 60 Ohm resistors with the shunt capacitor between them, usually between 1-100nf.

This is a termination method that also helps filter out AC noise, but it's worth mentioning that both of the 60-ohm resistors need to be well matched for it to function properly. If the extra AC filtering isn't a concern, you could replace the capacitor and both resistors with a single 120 Ohm resistor instead.

    Hope this helps!
