TCAN1043-Q1: Layout guidelines for TCAN1043DRQ1

Part Number: TCAN1043-Q1

Dear Team,

I am using TCAN1043DRQ1 in my design.

May I know what are the layout guidelines I need to follow.

I checked the datasheet it.It does not say anything about layout guidelines. It tells more about protection .

I have few questions.

1)What is the required trace width for signal lines(RXD,TXD,STB_N,EN,ERR_N,SPLIT)

2) What is the required trace width for supply lines.(VBAT,VCC,VIO)

3)I know the Z0 of can lines(CANH,CANL) is 120 ohm.May I know is there any width requirement.

Regards

HARI

  • Hi Hari,

These are not strict requirements for the trace characteristics for CAN signals, but I can provide some rough guidelines.

1)What is the required trace width for signal lines(RXD,TXD,STB_N,EN,ERR_N,SPLIT)

For digital signals, I typical use a trace thickness of 10mil. If space are clearance is an issue I have used down to 7mil with no issue, but is is likely possible to go much smaller if needed. These are relatively low frequency signals that don't pass much current so they are pretty forgiving. I would only recommend not routing them near power lines or other switching signals to avoid cross talk.

    2) What is the required trace width for supply lines.(VBAT,VCC,VIO)

This will depend on the power requirements for the supply rails. The highest current rail here will be Vcc with a maximum transient draw of around 125mA with typical draw closer to 50mA. The supply rail should be sized to accommodate this current delivery. For the boards I design, I generally use regions or 20mil for everywhere there is space and sizing down when getting close to other components/traces. Vsup and Vio will draw significantly less current, so 10mil should be fine for these unless they are delivering current to any other IC nearby.

3)I know the Z0 of can lines(CANH,CANL) is 120 ohm.May I know is there any width requirement.

I'll link the long-form answer to this below, but I would recommend 10mil for the CAN traces as well. Please read the linked post for more considerations on this.
