MAX3232: Receiver Electrical Characteristics

Part Number: MAX3232

Hi team,

I am using MAX3232IPWR. The typical driver output electrical characteristics have been given in the datasheet which is +/- 5.4 V. Similarly I would like to know the typical receiver input characteristics for the device, which has not been given in the datasheet.

Thanks,

Kshitish

  • The input characteristics are specified in section 6.7 of the datasheet.

  • Hi Clemens,

Those are the input hysteresis thresholds. According to my understanding, the receiver will receive signals in RS-232 levels i.e. +/-25 V at RIN and provide an output in digital logic levels at ROUT. But the +/-25 V is the absolute maximum rating. I would like to know the typical input characteristics.

    Thanks,

    Kshitish

  • The specified VIT+ and VIT− values are where the input switches. Any voltage above VIT+ will be read as space, any voltage below VIT− will be read as mark.

The voltage at the input pins is determined by the other device that is driving the bus, so it is not possible for the MAX3232 to specify what the typical value of that would be.

The RS-232 specification requires voltages between ±3 V and ±15 V, but the MAX-3232 inputs have been designed to also work with inverted TTL signals.
