DP83849IFVS-EVK: communication not establishing

Part Number: DP83849IFVS-EVK

hello,

I'm not able to implement ethernet to fiber optic conversion in  DP83849IFVS-EVKIT

i have connected ethernet cable to port A  RJ45 [ AN0_A , AN1_A  & ANEN_A are jumpered high]

both AN0 & AN1 lights were glowing and ANEN_A blinking when i send data

but still host is unreachable but i have tested the receiver side that device is working fine

Destination host unreachable is coming when i do ping test

could anyone tell me how can i test it and know that whether the data is transmitting or not

best regards,

Tex

  • Hi Tex,

DP83849 PHY is a really old product. We have limited database to support on this product, but we will try to give you as much support as we can on our side.

I would like some clarification on your setup:

    • Are you trying to perform a fiber communication for DP83849? If so, what is the link partner?
    • Are you seeing link when you are connecting DP83849 to the link partner?
    • Could you give us the registers information on 0x0000 and 0x001F on D83849?

  • Thanks for your reply Hillman Lin,

    1. I'm trying to perform Ethernet to fiber optic media conversion and my link partner is digisol
    2. No! i'm not seeing the link LED when i connect DP83849IFVS-EVKIT to the link partner DIGISOL.
    3. i'm trying to achieve media conversion without programming/accessing registers with the physical interface

also please observe the Fiber optic connector which i've connected in some where else in the middle then only the link is happening between DP83849IFVS-EVKIT and DIGISOL (i've tried replacing multiple Fiber Optic cables)

also when i try to  ping showing: destination host is unreachable

Please go through the attached images

    Best regards,

    Tex

  • Hi Tex,

Thank you for sharing the setup photos. I think I have a better understanding on your setup.

    • Based on your first and second photos, I see the link LED is on for both DP83849IFVS-EVKIT and DIGISOL.
    • If my understanding is correct. you are able to see LED to turn on but not able to ping right?
    • If so, could you read the register 0x0000 and 0x001F to see the current status of DP83849PHY? Register would help us know the status on DP83849.
    • May I also ask is copper side speed same as fiber side's speed? I see speed LED on the copper side but not on the fiber side. Copper and fiber converter need to operate in same speed for communication.
    • If link is confirm with registers, setting the PHY to loopback and see the does the Hubs is able to send the received packets without any drop or error.

  • Thanks for your reply,

I'm not properly understanding what you are trying to say

    • Is there any software on this EV KIT to find the register values ???
    • as you can see on the above mentioned image, there is only few LEDs turned on but not all 6 LEDs,Copper side LED & Fiber side LED is not glowing so not same speed it seems
    • How can set PHY to loopback and see Hubs is able to to send the received packets without any drop or error..
    • And one of the major issue as you can see the Fiber optic connector it is not properly plugged when i put the fiber optic cable some where else in the middle the link LED is on please help me with that

    Best regards,

    Tex

  • Hi Tex,

Sorry for the confusion. I will add more information for better understanding.

DP83849PHY or any other ethernet PHY should have a MDIO/MDC connection. In the EVM it will be J1B jumper. Register within the PHY will indicate the health status of the PHY. In order to support better support or having more understanding on the health condition of the PHY, reading register within the PHY would be really helpful.

Sorry if I see misread it. I cannot tell which LED is turned on based on your photos of the Hubs. But from the EVM link staus LED, I see a link up on both side. That is why assume the PHY is operate in link up mode.

Could we confirm the PHY is link up or not through registers and/or on the Hubs before we move on the next debug process?

May I also ask are you able to perform a link up with another 849 EVM boards?

  • hello Hillman Lin,

    • Please tell me How can I check the register values, is there any software ???
    • As you can see MDIO/MDC connection has been set to port A ethernet side
    • I can confirm that Link up is OK
    • But what about the speed LED ??? Ethernet side speed LED blinking and fiber side it is off..

    Regards,

    Tex

  • Hi Tex,

We use the USB2DMDIO GUI to check the register. We do have a user guide to provide a detail guide on how to use this tool. It should be really straight forward.

    USB2MDIO userguide.pdf

Speed LED you are asking only apply for copper communication.

Here are some test we could perform without register write first:

    • Did you install J8, J10, and J92. for the DP83849IFVS-EVK?
    • If possible, could you also try if you can link up with another DP83849IFVS-EVK?
    • One more test we can perform on your side without register read and write are disconnect the copper side on the DP83849IFVS-EVK and probe if you are able to see any signal on the copper side?

  • hello Hillman Lin,

    • I have only 1 DP83849IFVS-EVK at present
    • Yes i have installed J8, J10, and J92
    • So, only 1 side (ethernet side) speed LED blinking is fine right ??
    • confirmation from my side (Ethernet side AN0 & AN1 were on and ANEN was blinking during ping test)

I didn't understood the last point can you please elaborate (without register read and write are disconnect the copper side on the DP83849IFVS-EVK and probe if you are able to see any signal on the copper side)

    regards,

    Tex

  • Hi Tex,

I will wait for your response on if you are able to see any signal coming out from the copper side.

If possible, could you try if you can access the status register on the EVM using USB2MDIO GUI?
