DP83TG720EVM-MC: No communication, but link ok.

Part Number: DP83TG720EVM-MC
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83867E

Hi

I have a setup where a Microchip LAN7431/LAN8870 PCIe eval board is configured as 1Gb T1 master and the TI DP83TG720EVM-MC as 1Gb T1 slave. The Link is up on DP83TG720 (register 0x0001 is: 0x0145) and DP83867 (register 0x0011 is: 0xbc16) as well as on LAN7431/LAN8870 and the DP83TG720EVM-MC shows good signal quality (LED D10 green). However I'm not able to ping from the T1 master to the TX ping target in the same ip subnet connected to the DP83TG720EVM-MC.

DP83TG720EVM-MC reports the following over the usb terminal interface:
- Board DP83TG720-Q1 Media Converter
- Board Revision 5 RGMII
- Mode 15 or 13
- Software Revision 2.91
- Phy Type 1: DP83867E
- Phy ID: 0
- Phy Revision: 1
- No compliance init script loaded
- Phy Type 0: DP83TG720
- Phy ID: 8
- Phy Revision: CS 1.1
- Compliance init script loaded

Is this a routing problem inside the DP83TG720EVM-MC? Do I have to program some registers to make this work?

Regards

  • Hi Urban,

I am not aware of any issues with routings on DP83TG720EVM-MC.

Can you please perform some more check using loopbacks?

    Experiment-1:

    • Enable Digital loopback (using register 0x0016) on DP83TG720EVM-MC. Try to transmit a few packets from the source connected to DP83867 part of DP83TG720EVM-MC and see if the packets are received back.

    Experiment-2:

    • Enable Reverse loopback on DP83TG720EVM-MC. Try to transmit a few packets from the source connected to DP83TG720 part of DP83TG720EVM-MC and see if the packets are received back.

  • Hi Gokul

Microchip found that the master phy LAN8870 did require additional register settings which they provided to us.

Now link and communication is fine with the DP83TG720EVM-MC.

    Thanks for your help!

    Regards,

    Urban
