DP83869HM: Information regarding selection of magnetics

Part Number: DP83869HM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869

Hi Ti,

1.I have a question on choosing ethernet magnetics.

we had recently made a custom board and have used DP83869 along with HM5149NL and it works fine at 1G. In revision 2.0 of this board there were addition of few more interface
which has consumed most of the space in the board. Thus, we are forced to change HM5179NL with a combination of "ALT3232M-151-T001 and MCZ1210AH900L2TA0G" to accommodate all components.

My question is,
1.Can we use ALT3232M-151-T001 and MCZ1210AH900L2TA0G instead of HM5149NL?
2.Are there any guides/application note/training materials which describes the parameters that needs to be considered while selecting magnetics?
3.Are there any guides/application note/training materials which describes why an isolation transformer, and a CMC is used?
4.Is the use of CMC is compulsory or optional?
5.I have seen few designs where CMC are at Phy side and in other design they were at cable side. Is there any specific reason for this?
6.Can magnetics designed for 100Base-T(HX2326NL) be used for 1000Base-T application?

PS: Ethernet signal on the board is routed to Backplane via VPX connector. And then going out of system via unshielded cat4 and shielded cat5 cables

  • Hi Sameep,

You can refer to specifications in section 10.2.1.2.2 in the datasheet for combined specifications of Isolation transformer + CMC.

CMC is not optional, but required to be mounted.

We currently don't have any training material on why both transformer and CMC are needed. But, I can notify concerned folks about the need for this material.

It is recommended to have CMC to be on the cable side to have minimal CM emissions on the cable.

If space is a constraint, can you please check if using magnetic integrated RJ45 is okay? Here is one of the parts as an example https://www.we-online.com/components/products/datasheet/74991104403.pdf
