I'm running a rpi4 + a custom tcan4550 board via jumper wires.

I'm successfully able to bring the can interface up in linux (rpi4 linux 6.6.0) and am able to send a single message to a host PC, the host to rpi4 does not work.

This was traced to the interrupt being pulled down by an error ECCERR.

Hello Filip,

I can see from the register dump that the ECCERR bit is getting set, but I also see the ARA (Access to Reserved Address) bit is getting set. If these are related, then it may indicate that there is some improper SPI write/read access to a reserved or undefined space that is causing a problem.

Other potential causes for an ECC error outside are a bad device, or some sort of voltage or clock disruption that occurred during the access which resulted in corrupted bits.

I have reviewed your register dump and didn't see anything that jumped out as an obvious error or cause for this issue. I have also reviewed the schematic and it looks pretty good. I do however have some recommendations with the crystal/clock circuit.

The TCAN4550 supports both a crystal and a single-ended clock. When the device powers up, a small 1uA current is sourced out of the OSC2 pin and a comparator is used to determine if the voltage on the OSC2 pin is "grounded" or has a voltage less than 100mv (typ). If the voltage is below this threshold, the device will disable the crystal transimpedance amplifier and expect a single-ended clock signal on OSC1. If the OSC2 pin voltage is greater than this threshold, the device will enable the transimpedance amplifier and source current out of the OSC1 pin to the crystal and the device will monitor the OSC2 pin for an oscillation waveform to use as a clock.

If the OSC2 waveform peak-to-peak amplitude becomes too large, the lowest level of the waveform could cross the threshold used to check whether the OSC2 pin is "grounded." If this occurs the device could momentarily disable the amplifier and switch to single-ended mode until the waveform Vpp decays to smaller level and the device switches back to crystal mode. But during this period of time, the device does not have a working clock, and SPI, CAN, and memory access issues may occur.

From your schematic, the crystal loading caps look a bit on the small side, and there is not a series dampening resistor between OSC1 and the crystal that could be used to restrict the current flowing to the crystal and keep the amplitude from becoming too large.

I have not seen an unoptimized crystal circuit cause ECC errors, but you could try to increase the capacitor values on the crystal caps to see if there is any improvement.

I have seen an unoptimized crystal circuit cause SPI and CAN communication issues. So if you don't have any SPI errors, the ECC errors may mean the TCAN4550 device has been damaged.

Hi Jonathan!

Thank you for the thorough explanation and pointer to the loading caps.

After I changed the caps to 8.2 pF and changed the chip, I got it up and running fine.

For future reference:

This crystal oscillator ESR I've used is 60Ω. This puts the design on the border range of acceptable values. The low cap values + the wrong crystal has lead me to the aforementioned issue.
