DP83869HM: TD_P and TD_M pins short to ground

Part Number: DP83869HM

Hi,

What will happen when TD_P or TD_M pins short to ground?  From datasheet "Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) to determine the quality of the cables, connectors,
and terminations in addition to estimating the cable length. Some of the possible problems that can be diagnosed include opens, shorts, cable impedance mismatch, bad connectors, termination mismatches, cross
faults, cross shorts, and any other discontinuities along the cable."  Will it prohibit its transmitter automatically when it detects short?

Thanks,

Larry

  • Hi Larry,

One thing I would like to clarify regarding to TDR feature in our PHY. TDR is normally used to detect any short or open in the cable and provide the approximate fault distance in the cable. TDR does not run in the normal application unless you enable TDR test specifically to test any cable fault in the system.

Therefore, TDR test won't prohibit it's transmitter automatically when it detects short in normal application.

  • Hi Hillman,

I read TDR feature and assumed TDR may provide short protection.  It looks like it's not the case.  Does this chip have any short protection?

    Thanks,

    Larry

  • Hi Lawrence,

May I ask what kind of short protection on MDI lines you are looking for?

If you are concerning about the damaged of the PHY. We do have the short MDI protection and tested HBM and ESD test all the way up +/-8kV which is shown in the table below:
