DP83822I: BIST(Built-in Self-Test) usage

Part Number: DP83822I

Hi Team,

I understand that BIST(Built-in Self-Test) is a fault diagnostic feature but I don't understand its usage.
Please tell me in what situations and for what purpose BIST is used for Ethernet PHY beginner.
Will this be used as a debug when developing a user's system?
Is the execution of this functionality intended to be incorporated as an application and used in the market?
Please let me know if there is any usage recommended.

Is BIST the different as Loopback mode described in section 8.4.8?
Or is BIST part of it?

Best Regards,

  • Hi Team,

BIST (Built-in Self-Test) are mainly used to test the integrity of transmit and receive data within the PHY such as packet error or packet loss when user does not have external packet generator.

Loopback is mainly used to isolate where is the problem occur: MAC side or MDI side. If user does not have external packet generator to generate packets for testing. Our PHY support internal packet generator which generate the packets within the PHY to test the transmit and receive data within the PHY which is also known as BIST.
