Hi team
Can any damages happen to the device when CANH and/or CANL shorted to GND?

Takahashi-san,
Clemens is correct, just shorting the CAN bus to GND will not cause damage to the device. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I asked the similar question regarding RS485 and just shorting the CAN bus to GND will not cause damage, but the self-heating can damage as the link belwo. Does same thing happen in SN65HVD233?

Takahashi-san,
Shorting the CAN bus to GND alone should not eventually cause damage, with the CAN short-circuit current limit it should keep the self-heating to a level that keeps the device from damage. The example you linked is the same here though in that it will be application-specific. The self heating could cause thermal shutdown, but it will be dependent on if the bus is being driven dominant, and the ambient temperature of the application. In either case, the CAN transceiver has dominant time out where the amount of time being driven dominant with a CAN bus short to GND will be very short, and likely not cause any thermal issues.
