What do you mean by GaN charger? Are you talking about external power path fets?

It depends on the PD power adaptor. If it support USB-PD only, it will not power the device. Some of the TI PD controllers will support legacy charging schemes (USB-C, BC1.2) and can still charge non-pd devices.
