TCAN1463-Q1: power size for termination resistor

Part Number: TCAN1463-Q1

Hello team,

A customer asks about the resistor power size installed for split termination on the sub node of CAN bus.

1/16W is acceptable for 1.3kohm? Otherwise, what is the optimal value?

Thanks and regards,

Sam Lee

  • Sam,

This can be determined using the specific fault conditions that the designer expects. Generally in normal operation, no more than 5 V will be present across the resistors, so you would need them to be able to withstand a 5 V potential difference at DC without damage. If their node uses 2.6 kΩ termination, this would correspond to (5 V)^2/(2.6 kΩ) ≈ 9.62 mW which should be fine for most resistors at 1/4 W. However, if your OEM specifically requires other conditions (such as a specific worst-case DC Vdiff), then you'd need to design for that worst-case DC condition.

    Best,

    Danny
