If I set the PHY address using the strap pin, is it necessary to specify the PHY address from the MAC side?

Use in basic mode.

    Hi Satoshi,

    The PHY Address is set by the strap pins. The MAC does not need to setup the PHY's address, but it does need to know it to communicate to it properly. 

    E.g. If the MAC is connected to multiple PHYs, each PHY must have a unique PHY address and the MAC has to know each one in order to send the data to the correct PHY.
