Is there a list of error codes the TCA9539 GPIO expander produces whenever a fault is found?

What would an error code of 31 mean?

No error codes present in the TCA9539 that would flag whenever a fault is found.

Do you have a scope shot of what you are trying to do here? Is this data that is being read from the IO expander?

The I²C specification does not define any mechanism to report error codes.

That error code is generated by your unknown I²C library. You have to check its documentation.
